Why Does Your Car Have Higher Fuel and Oil Consumption?

You finally decided to buy your favourite Toyota Rav4, for which you have been saving up for several years. Of course, you are all excited about your purchase! But the faces of car enthusiasts become long when they notice that their “iron horse” has increased fuel consumption. And the figure is significantly larger than the one indicated in the car documents.
However, before taking any action, you need to find out the reasons. The reasons for the increased fuel consumption can be divided into two main categories:
1. Objective – problems of a technical nature. Parts wear out and can no longer perform their functions to their fullest.
2. Subjective – problems, the fault of which is the human factor.
Objective reasons of increased fuel consumption:
When the angle of the ignition shift is increased, the fuel is consumed more quickly. The greater the angle, the greater the fuel consumption.
Check that the gaps in the spark plugs are correctly positioned.
Compare the temperature of the coolant with the calculated one. If it is lower, the engine will take up to 8% additional fuel for warm-up.
If you are running a car with low-quality gasoline or diesel, and the mileage of your car is huge, it’s not superfluous to check the cylinder-piston group assembly.
Change the engine oil in time.
If there are problems with the clutch assembly, then due to slippage the fuel consumption increases noticeably.
Check the tire pressure. When rolling on low-lying tires, the frictional force increases. So, if the pressure is reduced by at least two atmospheres, fuel consumption is increased to 4%.
Subjective causes of increased fuel consumption:
When loading the car with excess weight, be prepared to pay 10% more for every 100 kilograms.
Open windows reduce the aerodynamics of the car, especially when driving at speeds over 60 km / h.
If your skills in driving leave much to be desired, you repeatedly jerk back and forth, the engine experiences a constant load, and therefore consumes more fuel.
Constantly activated air conditioner also can affect the “appetite” of your favorite car.
Middle and high beam headlights increase fuel consumption by 5% and 10% respectively.
This is not all the reasons for the increased fuel consumption, but only the main ones. It is necessary to carry out regular diagnostics of your car in order not to overpay for fuel in the future.
Increased oil consumption: causes and solutions
For the vast majority of motorists, an increase in the consumption of engine oil is a direct indication of engine failure.
However, increased consumption of motor oil does not always indicate serious malfunctions.
How can we find out the reason for the increased oil consumption?
As experience shows, the increase in the consumption of motor oil is not always caused by burnout, but, it can simply flow out as a result of a breach of the system’s tightness. But how to determine the leakage of oil? As a rule, with such a leak, engine oil stains are clearly visible on the outer side walls of the engine. The fault is the destruction of the sealing gasket.
1) Wear of cylinders
Wear of cylinders is not a very frequent phenomenon and, as a rule, quite expected. However, for used cars, this is the most objective reason for increasing oil consumption. However, it is very problematic to say with certainty why the cylinders have become unusable. This can be trivial pollution, or simply the use of inappropriate oil.
2) Unsuitable type of oil
If oil is poured, not appropriate to your engine type, there is absolutely nothing surprising in that it burns out much faster.
Correctly chosen intervals of replacement of engine oil – perhaps, the only way to avoid undesirable consequences and breakdowns of your used or new Nissan Rogue or Toyota Corolla.
